How it started
In 1985, the CSE Department started as the Computer Centre unit of the then School of Industrial Technology. At that time the department was made up of only four academic staff and offered a diploma in Computer Science and a certificate course in Computer science.
The first degree programmes
In 1990, a BSc course in computer science was offered with an intake of about thirty students. The appellation of the degree was later on changed to "B.Eng. in Computer Science and Engineering" in 1997. The student intake was gradually increased reaching 200 in 1999. In the meantime, the unit became the full-fledged department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Recent times
As from year 2000, two new B.Sc. programmes, namely B.Sc. Computer Science and Engineering and B.Sc. Information Systems, were introduced to replace the B.Eng programme.
The Department also started offering M.Sc. programmes as from academic year 2000/2001. The first programme was the conversion course M.Sc. IT with management for non-IT graduates. In subsequent years, the "management" component was removed and the programme became "M.Sc. IT". As from 2004, the department has also started with a pure M.Sc. programme, M.Sc. Computer Science with specialization in either Distributed Systems and Multimedia or Software engineering.
Today the department is the biggest of the faculty of Engineering. It has twenty-nine members of academic staff and about 500 students enrolled on BSc and MSc courses.
Soon, we will be offering our first full time Master in Computer Applications programme which will be a high level 2-years conversion course for students having a non-computing background.
We are still innovating...
